The Choral Department at West Craven High School promotes music for all. We perform music for music sake, advocate for music education, and lead the way as change agents in our school, community, and world.
Music Literacy: Reading and notating music (Note names and musical symbols)
Music Theory: Learning and using how music is structured and composed.
Sight Reading- Comprehending musical language correctly and utilizing the voice to express it in sound. (Solfege, notational systems, and ear training.
Vocal Production- Learning and using techniques that effectively and efficiently create a healthy and proper vocal production.
Ensemble skills- Using the voice effectively with others and learning to efficiently and cooperatively work together.
Musicianship- Use of the musical techniques to create a more aesthetically pleasing musical experience, emotion of music, and individual musicianship.
Music History- Evolution of music, composers, performers, multicultural music, and modern music history.
Students learn and practice transferable 21st century skills such as personal productivity, people skills, social responsibility, self direction, ethics, accountability, leadership,personal responsibility, and adaptability. Additionally students will develop skills in discipline, teamwork,time management, and apply music to real life experiences. Students are taught how to navigate via high school and learn about their many options post secondary education. All students are encouraged to go to college, military, and workforce.
We are so excited to announce that we now have the Tri-M Music Honor Society here at West Craven High School. Tri-M is the only national honor society for student musicians in the country, it highlights our schools music programs, and gives students the opportunity to perform, lead, and serve. If you are interested and have participated in band or choir for at least one semester, exemplify academic excellence, and strong character.
